This file is necessarily interlinked with the broader field of cryptozoology — the study of animals whose existence is unproven — because the body of evidence and testimony is inseparable from that discipline. Its body is covered entirely in hair — typically described as dark brown, black, or occasionally reddish-brown or auburn in color — ranging from approximately two to six inches in length. The hair is consistently described as shaggy or matted rather than groomed. The head sits directly atop broad shoulders with little to no visible neck, and the skull is described as having a pronounced sagittal crest, giving the head a conical or domed appearance distinct from that of a human. In the most widely accepted behavioral model — articulated by researchers including John Green, Dr. Jeff Meldrum, and the BFRO — the Sasquatch is a primarily nocturnal or crepuscular creature with an acute sensory apparatus. Witness accounts consistently describe the creature as having exceptionally keen hearing and sense of smell, allowing it to detect human presence at considerable distances. Its dark coloration and tendency to remain motionless when observed at a distance provide natural camouflage in forested environments. The name “Bigfoot” entered the English language in 1958 through the Humboldt Times newspaper of Eureka, California. Reporter Andrew Genzoli published a letter from a reader describing large, mysterious footprints discovered by logging workers in the Bluff Creek area. The worker, Jerry Crew, had made plaster casts of the footprints — enormous impressions measuring approximately 16 inches in length. Genzoli’s follow-up article on October 6, 1958, used the word “Bigfoot” in the headline, and the term entered public consciousness virtually overnight. The Jerry Crew footprint casts remain among the most famous physical artifacts in cryptozoology and are housed in the Willow Creek-China Flat Museum in Willow Creek, California.
However, the phenomenon long predates the 1958 naming. The earliest published settler account in the region dates to 1811, when fur trader David Thompson — a meticulous cartographer and explorer for the North West Company — recorded finding large, human-like footprints in the snow near what is now Jasper, Alberta, Canada. Thompson’s journal entry noted the prints were “unlike any track I had seen before” and his Indigenous guides attributed them to a large, hairy forest being.

The Patterson-Gimlin film (1967) remains the centerpiece of visual Sasquatch evidence. The 59-second 16mm color film, shot at Bluff Creek, California, shows a large, hair-covered, bipedal figure walking away from the camera across a sandbar. The figure’s gait, apparent muscle movement beneath the hair, and anatomical proportions have been studied for over fifty years. No special effects professional has definitively demonstrated how a costume of comparable realism could have been produced with 1967 technology, though several have proposed methods. The figure could be a person in a costume — various individuals have claimed to have been the person in the suit, though these claims are contradictory. The lack of improved photographic evidence in the era of ubiquitous cameras is noted as a significant evidentiary gap. No film or photograph has been authenticated as depicting a Sasquatch by the mainstream scientific community.
Researchers have collected audio recordings of alleged Sasquatch vocalizations — including howls, screams, whoops, and “chatter” — from remote forest locations across North America. The most famous of these are the “Sierra Sounds,” recorded by Ron Morehead and Al Berry in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California between 1971 and 1974. The recordings capture what sound like a complex series of vocalizations — described by some listeners as resembling a form of proto-language — emanating from a forested area with no visible human presence. The recordings have been analyzed by linguists and audio engineers, some of whom have stated that the vocal range and complexity would be difficult for a human to produce without electronic manipulation.
A second category of audio evidence is “wood-knocking” — loud, percussive sounds produced by striking a tree or log with a heavy object. Researchers interpret this behavior as a form of long-distance communication between individuals, and have documented instances where knocks from one location appear to elicit responding knocks from a distant location. The BFRO incorporates wood-knocking into its field investigation protocols as a potential method of eliciting a response.
Mainstream explanation: The Sierra Sounds and similar recordings could represent known animals (coyotes, elk, bears) whose vocalizations are distorted by distance and forest acoustics, or they could be human-made hoaxes. Sound carries in complex ways through forest environments, and animals produce a wider range of vocalizations than most people recognize. Wood-knocking sounds are consistent with natural forest noises, including branches breaking and trees rubbing together in wind.
Hair samples attributed to the Sasquatch have been collected from barbed-wire fences, tree bark, and other snag points in areas of reported activity. Microscopic analysis of some samples has returned results described as “unknown primate” or “unidentified mammal” — hair that does not match any known North American species in the reference databases. However, when these same samples have been subjected to DNA analysis, results have consistently matched known species — predominantly bear (Ursus americanus, Ursus arctos), but also deer, coyote, porcupine, and human.
A 2014 study led by Dr. Bryan Sykes of Oxford University, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, analyzed 30 hair samples attributed to anomalous primates (Sasquatch and Yeti). Researchers also point to tree formations — including bent or woven branches, uprooted trees placed in specific configurations, and stick structures — as potential territorial markers or communication signs left by Sasquatch individuals.
The BFRO maintains a database of nest site locations and has documented patterns — including proximity to water sources, elevation preferences, and seasonal variations — that researchers argue are consistent with the behavior of a large, intelligent omnivore. Critics note that many of these formations can be explained by natural processes including windfall, snow load, animal activity, and forest succession. The absence of hair, scat, or other biological material definitively associated with nest sites is noted as a significant evidentiary gap.
Mainstream explanation: Nesting structures are consistent with known bear behavior, and tree formations are consistent with natural forest processes including storm damage, ice loading, and beaver activity. The human tendency to perceive pattern and intention in natural formations (pareidolia, agency detection) may account for the interpretation of these features as deliberate constructions. Without associated biological evidence, these formations do not constitute proof of an unknown species.

The following individuals have played significant roles in the development of the Sasquatch phenomenon — as witnesses whose accounts form the foundation of the evidence base, as researchers who have dedicated decades to field investigation and analysis, or as figures whose contributions (including acknowledged hoaxes) have shaped public understanding of the subject. - Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin: The two men who captured the Patterson-Gimlin film on October 20, 1967, at Bluff Creek, California. Patterson (1933–1972) was an amateur investigator and rodeo rider who had been actively searching for Sasquatch evidence for several years prior to the filming. Gimlin (b. 1931) accompanied Patterson on the expedition and has consistently maintained the authenticity of the film for over five decades. Both men passed polygraph examinations regarding the film’s authenticity, though polygraph results are not considered scientifically definitive.
