The Book of Aquarius

The author embedded a cryptographic proof of identity in the original text — a SHA-1 hash of a poem written by the author in an unspecified language. SHA-1 is a one-way cryptographic hash function: it can compute a hash value from a given input, but it is computationally infeasible to reverse-calculate the input from the hash value alone. This means that anyone possessing the original poem can prove they are the author by producing the poem and demonstrating that it generates the hash. Anyone who does not possess the poem cannot fake this proof, regardless of how convincingly they claim authorship.

The author stated explicitly that this mechanism would be deployed in two circumstances: if an impostor published content falsely attributed to the Book of Aquarius, or if there was doubt about the authorship of any subsequent communication. The author also noted the mechanism could be used to verify identity if they ever chose to reveal themselves. The hash is embedded in the original text and has been reproduced in every version since:

Since the forum’s disappearance in approximately 2012–2014, the SHA-1 key — the poem that would resolve all questions of authorship — has never been published. This is the central evidentiary fact of the authorship question. Consider the occasions on which deployment would have been expected:

• The Impostor Problem — Specifically Anticipated The author warned, in the original text, that impostors would appear on forums pretending to be the author and instructed readers to trust no claimed author except on the official forum. Impostors did appear, promptly and in numbers. The official forum was deleted rather than used to authenticate the author against them. The SHA-1 key — which would have resolved every impostor claim definitively — was never produced.
• The “SaltHeart” Publisher Claim — Unauthenticated A publisher operating as “SaltHeart” released an edited physical edition of the text in approximately 2012, claiming to have corresponded with the anonymous author by email and to have received the author’s blessing to produce and sell the book. The SHA-1 key was not provided with or by this claim. No cryptographic verification of any kind was offered. This claim is treated by this Directorate as unauthenticated. The author had a mechanism specifically designed for this purpose and did not use it.
• The 2023 Reddit Retraction — Unauthenticated A post on the r/alchemy subreddit in 2023 claimed to represent an official retraction by the original author, stating the work was a fabrication and the process does not function. The post offered no SHA-1 verification. It contained no specific technical criticism of the described process that would constitute credible insider knowledge. It read as a generic disavowal. The retraction was treated sceptically by the majority of the active community, and this Directorate concurs: an author who embedded a specific identity-verification mechanism in anticipation of precisely this type of false claim, and who then declined to use it when such a claim was made, either under their own name or against them, has either ceased to exist, ceased to care, or has reasons for silence that have not been disclosed.

The Starting Material

The single most controversial element of the text is its identification of fresh human urine as the prima materia — the starting material of the entire process. The author reaches this conclusion through an extended analysis of the historical alchemical corpus, demonstrating that the descriptors applied to the prima materia across centuries of independent alchemical writing — “found everywhere,” “despised by all,” “cast aside in the streets,” “the beginning and the end,” “that which is within you,” available to the poorest peasant at no cost — are precisely consistent with urine and inconsistent with every other candidate material that has been proposed. The author argues this identification is not original to the Book of Aquarius; it is the literal meaning of the historical texts, obscured by the assumption that alchemy must be metaphorical.

The author draws extensively on the historical alchemical canon to establish this correspondence, quoting Paracelsus, Ramon Llull, George Ripley, Thomas Norton, Sendivogius, Basil Valentine, Peter Bonus, Philalethes, Baro Urbigerus, and the authors of the Mutus Liber, Splendor Solis, and the Glory of the World. The cross-referencing of these independent sources against a single claimed material and process is among the most elaborated features of the text — and the one that has generated the most serious engagement from those who take the work seriously.

Throughout the process, the working material undergoes characteristic colour changes that serve as progress markers. The author identifies and describes these changes in sequence and cross-references them against the same colour sequences described independently across the historical alchemical literature. The convergence of predicted colour progression with that documented across multiple independent historical sources is cited by proponents as the most compelling evidence that the process is correctly identified — it would require either that the author has correctly decoded the historical method, or that an implausible number of independent historical sources share a common fabrication.

• Prima Materia — Fresh Human Urine Collected fresh and allowed to begin natural fermentation. The author identifies this as the “secret fire” of alchemical literature — not an external heating agent but an intrinsic energetic property of the starting material. The biological and chemical processes occurring during fermentation are described as the first stage of natural decomposition that the alchemist works with, not against.
• Putrefaction — The Black Phase (Nigredo) The sealed material is subjected to gentle, sustained heat — body temperature to mildly elevated — over an extended period. It darkens and develops characteristic odours documented consistently across historical accounts. This stage corresponds to the alchemical Nigredo or Black Phase, represented throughout historical imagery by ravens, crows, and the blackening of the prima materia.
• Distillation — Separation of Volatile and Fixed Components The putrefied material is distilled using conventional laboratory glassware, separating volatile fractions from fixed salts. Multiple redistillation cycles progressively purify both components. The author identifies illustrations in the Mutus Liber — the wordless 1677 alchemical text — as direct depictions of this distillation procedure.
• Calcination — The White Phase (Albedo) Fixed salts are heated to high temperature in air, producing characteristic colour transformations. The appearance of white crystalline structures at this stage corresponds to the alchemical White Phase or Albedo — associated in the literature with purification, the white dove, and the “White Stone” capable of purifying silver.
• Multiplication and the Red Stone (Rubedo) The completed White Stone undergoes further processing to produce the Red Stone — the fully realised Philosophers’ Stone associated throughout the alchemical canon with the sun, gold, and the universal medicine. The author is explicit that the medicinal application is primary; gold transmutation is presented as secondary and as a historical misdirection designed to draw public attention away from the medicine.
• Claimed Effects — The Universal Medicine The completed Stone, ingested as a medicine, is claimed to: cure all disease without exception; reverse biological ageing; and, in the limit, extend life indefinitely. The author describes these as the Stone’s primary significance. The immortality claim is presented not as mythological hyperbole but as the practical consequence of a completed process that concentrates and directs the fundamental life-force that the author terms “philosophical mercury” — a principle present in the starting material and concentrated through each stage of the work.

The Book of Aquarius claims to provide the first complete and correct reading of the historical alchemical canon — a reading that strips the allegorical language and recovers the literal laboratory procedure underneath. The following historical texts and images are among those cited, decoded, and re-contextualised by the author.

The author’s most structurally robust argument is the colour sequence correspondence. The historical alchemical literature consistently describes a sequence of colour changes in the working material: black (Nigredo), white (Albedo), yellow (Citrinitas), and red (Rubedo). This sequence is documented independently across dozens of European, Arabic, and other alchemical texts spanning more than a millennium. The author argues that this sequence, which has no agreed explanation in the metaphorical or proto-chemical interpretations of alchemy, is precisely the sequence produced by the described procedure applied to the described starting material — and that its consistent, independent documentation across the historical canon constitutes strong evidence that all of these authors were describing the same material process.

The text itself — freely distributed, placed in the public domain, available on the Internet Archive and multiple independent mirrors — has never been successfully suppressed. The suppression pattern is not directed at the text. It is directed specifically and consistently at documentation of apparent progress in replication attempts: photographs, descriptions of advanced-stage colour changes, images described as showing phosphorescent or self-luminous crystalline formations, and accounts from individuals who report reaching stages consistent with the text’s predicted progression.

This specificity is the anomaly. A suppression operation targeting fringe internet content would be expected to target the text itself — the primary source of the claim. A suppression operation targeting exclusively the verifiable evidence of the claim’s efficacy, while leaving the claim itself untouched, is consistent with a different objective: not discrediting the theory, but preventing its verification.

• Forum Deletion — The Official Channel Disappears The official Book of Aquarius forum at www.thebookofaquarius.com — the only venue the author designated as authorised for communication — was deleted. The deletion occurred without announcement, without a farewell post, and without any subsequent appearance by the author on any other platform. The forum had been active, with the author responding to questions and issuing text updates, up to the period of its disappearance. No explanation has been provided. The forum’s disappearance marks the beginning of the author’s permanent silence.
• Replication Thread Deletions — Platform-Wide Pattern Across multiple independent alchemy forums over the period 2011–2025, a consistent pattern has been observed: threads documenting active replication attempts reach an advanced stage — typically the appearance of crystalline formations, unusual optical properties in the working material, or colour transitions matching the text’s predictions — and are then deleted. In several documented cases, this was accompanied by the banning or disappearance of the account that posted them. Threads discussing the process theoretically, or reporting early-stage failures, appear not to have been subjected to comparable treatment. The specificity of the targeting — advanced stages, not discussion; apparent progress, not failure — is the operationally significant feature.
• Wayback Machine Gaps — Archival Infrastructure Targeted The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine is operated as a non-profit digital preservation service specifically designed to maintain the historical record of deleted internet content. In the case of the Book of Aquarius replication threads, Realm33 analysts have documented systematic gaps in Archive capture records that are inconsistent with ordinary archiving behaviour: specific thread revisions containing photographic evidence are absent from the Archive while earlier and later revisions of the same threads are preserved. This pattern implies either that targeted deletion requests were submitted to the Internet Archive — a process that exists but is intended for copyright purposes — or that the capture gaps represent something else entirely. The Archive does not routinely publish records of deletion requests it receives.
• The Why Files Episode — Removal From All Known Platforms The YouTube channel The Why Files — operated by AJ Gentile, with a subscriber base measured in millions and a consistent track record of responsible engagement with fringe topics — published an episode addressing the Book of Aquarius and the phenomenon of alleged replication successes in August 2025. The episode generated substantial engagement before being removed from YouTube. According to documented community reports, it was subsequently removed from Wayback Machine capture records as well. Mirror copies that appeared on alternative platforms were identified and eliminated systematically. As of the compilation of this file in March 2026, no authorised copy of the episode is accessible through any mainstream channel. The channel’s operators have not publicly discussed the removal. The episode did not appear to violate any stated platform content policies.
• The Disappearance Pattern Among Individual Replicators A recurring sequence has been observed among individuals publicly documenting replication attempts. An individual begins posting progress documentation over weeks or months; the documentation reaches an advanced stage consistent with the text’s predicted progression; the poster then either deletes their account, ceases all online activity without explanation, or states they are withdrawing from public discussion without providing a reason. This pattern has been observed across independent forums with no apparent communication between the individuals involved. At least three cases in Realm33 archives involved individuals who had maintained active online presences for years before their replication-related withdrawal, and who have not reappeared on any platform since.

• Scientific Dismissal — “No Known Mechanism” Mainstream chemistry rejects the process as described. The decomposition chemistry of urine under the conditions described is well-characterised and produces no compounds with transmutative or life-extending properties by any known mechanism. Critics argue this settles the matter; proponents argue, and this Directorate records, that “no known mechanism” and “physically impossible” are categorically different claims, and that the history of science contains numerous phenomena that were observed before they were explained.
• Health and Safety Concerns — Real and Documented Sustained exposure to decomposing organic material produces volatile compounds — ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, and microbial metabolites — that present genuine respiratory and systemic health risks in poorly ventilated conditions. Several practitioners have reported adverse health effects. The text itself acknowledges this risk and provides safety guidance. Critics argue the guidance is insufficient; proponents note the same risks apply to conventional laboratory chemistry and are similarly manageable with appropriate precautions.
• The Why Files Episode — A Removal Without Explanation The August 2025 episode produced by The Why Files is, as of March 2026, inaccessible through any mainstream channel. The episode was produced by a channel with millions of subscribers and a consistent content policy record. No policy violation was cited for its removal. No official explanation was offered by YouTube, the channel operators, or any other party. The removal from Wayback Machine capture records — if confirmed — represents a qualitatively different category of suppression from ordinary content moderation. This event has generated more discussion within communities studying the text than any development since the original 2012 forum disappearance.
• The 2023 Reddit Retraction — Unauthenticated and Structurally Suspicious A post on the r/alchemy subreddit in 2023 claimed to represent an official retraction by the original author. The post provided no SHA-1 cryptographic verification — the mechanism the author specifically established for exactly this scenario. It contained no specific technical errors in the described method that would constitute credible insider knowledge; it read as a generic disavowal that any close reader of the text could have produced. The majority of the active replication community treats this retraction as inauthentic. This Directorate treats it as unauthenticated and notes that a genuine retraction from the original author would, by their own established protocol, be accompanied by the SHA-1 key that proves authorship. None was provided.
• Literal versus Metaphorical Debate A subset of alchemical scholars argues that the Book of Aquarius has introduced a systematic misreading of texts that were always metaphorical or proto-psychological in nature. This position requires an explanation for the specificity of the colour sequence correspondences documented independently across the historical corpus — correspondences that the metaphorical reading does not address with equivalent precision.
• Suppression as Proof of Concept An argument made with increasing frequency in communities engaged with the text: the comprehensiveness of the documented suppression pattern — extending to archival infrastructure specifically designed to preserve deleted content — is itself the strongest available evidence that the process functions. Ineffective methods do not, as a general rule, attract comprehensive suppression operations. This argument is not dispositive — suppression of ineffective claims for reasons unrelated to their efficacy is documented across numerous other contexts — but the specificity of the targeting (advanced replication stages, not the text itself; verification, not discussion) is more difficult to explain as ordinary content moderation than the simple existence of removals.
